FITNESS AND SPORTS PERFORMANCE TRAINING
Winning Edge Strength and Conditioning is a fantastic program which is available to Primary Students (Grades 3-6), Secondary Students (Grades 7-10) or advanced (16-18 Year Olds). These programs are conducted separately, with the secondary sessions being more advanced in nature. It is open to Girls and Boys of all abilities and has a strong track record of helping kids be at their best both on and of the sporting field.
Sessions are designed and implemented by our Specialist S&C Coach (Bachelor of Sports Science + Masters in Strength and Conditioning) who caters for the specific goals and requirements of the individual’s chosen sport/sports.
Our dynamic research based training methods are specifically designed to increase cardio-vascular fitness and significantly improve sports performance (strength, speed, power and agility). We use a blend of interval, resistance and plyometric training exercises specifically designed to help children become fitter, faster and stronger, while also dramatically reducing the likelihood of injuries.Mental Conditioning & Life Skills
MENTAL CONDITIONING AND LIFE SKILLS
As with all Winning Edge programs there is a strong emphasis in the WEA S&C Program on mental conditioning (determination, commitment, focus, discipline, attention to detail, resilience, teamwork).
We believe that in sport and in life, having the right mindset is the key to success. Life skills instruction takes place during every session, giving our members real time feedback and an opportunity to learn in the moment. At Winning Edge we firmly believe that character development is only possible when the topic is in context and the children are experiencing the specific emotion at the time. Learning to self regulate and control one’s emotions is crucial to living a happy and fulfilling life.
Sport is our vehicle for making meaningful connections with children to ensure they are well balanced and prepared for the road ahead.
Injury Prevention and Management
The importance of managing active growing bodies cannot be understated. At WEA we work closely with the team at Empower Physiotherapy to provide children in our Academies with the knowledge and understanding required to get the most out of their bodies. Members are exposed to the very latest in injury prevention and management practices including the PEP program developed by the Santa Monica Sports Medicine Research Foundation.
The PEP program (Prevent injury and Enhance Performance Program) has been shown to decrease both first time ACL injuries and further ACL injuries after reconstruction. This program is a highly specific session that replaces the traditional warm up. It consists of a warm-up, stretching, strengthening, plyometrics, and sport specific agility training. Athletes can reduce their risk of ACL injuries by performing training drills that require balance, power and agility. Adding plyometric exercises, such as jumping, and balance drills helps improve neuromuscular conditioning and muscular reactions which decrease the risk of ACL injury.
Nutrition and Hydration
As we all know food and water are the vital fuel required for our bodies to perform at their best. Winning Edge athletes receive ongoing education on the optimal levels of nutrition and hydration required to improve performance and support a healthy lifestyle. We aim to use this as a means of supporting the work of parents in ensuring our children develop positive habits for life.
Warm up, Cool Down and Recovery
All Winning Edge Fitness participants follow strict warm up and cool down routines when taking part in our sessions. Warm ups consist of dynamic exercises which thoroughly prepare the body for physical activity, while cool downs are comprised of static stretches which work to improve flexibility and increase the range of motion in joints. Learning to adequately warm up and cool down from a young age is hugely beneficial, particularly for aspiring athletes. Through their involvement in the Academy children are taught to take responsibility for the management of their own body. This is yet another way in which Winning Edge works to transition kids towards independence, empowering them to make decisions that are in their best interests without a reliance on others.
Members also use foam rollers as a means of managing ongoing soreness during periods of intense training. Foam rolling or self-myofascial release is a means of reducing muscle tightness and eliminating trigger points. It also works to promote blood flow by breaking up those painful knots that have formed in the muscle. WEA members are strongly urged to attain their own foam roller and to use it regularly throughout the week. Over 90% of our members currently have a roller and can often be seen using them before and after sessions to cope with the demands of the busy sporting calendar.
HOW IT WORKS
Winning Edge S&C Programs are paid for upfront per term (8 or 9 Weeks). Due to the changing circumstances of a child’s sporting commitments, families are then able to reassess at the end of each term prior to the start of the next. You are welcome to choose to attend either once or twice per week. Sessions are $15 each for once weekly or $12.50 each for twice weekly.
